The nightmare of a faint barcode

Last Tuesday I got a frantic call from a packaging plant in Ohio. Their line was running double shifts packing cereal boxes. The quality check had flagged an entire pallet. The DataMatrix codes on the kraft cardboard looked like a ghost had sneezed on them. The customer was threatening to reject the shipment. The factory manager was sweating bullets. This is the kind of call that keeps a field service guy like me up at night. The problem is almost never the cardboard itself. It is usually a mismatch between the marking technology and the material’s surface energy or the production line speed.

Why standard CIJ fails on corrugated

Most people reach for their trusty Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) printer when they see cardboard. And for glossy coated cartons, it works fine. But for plain kraft or recycled corrugated board, the liquid ink from a CIJ gets sucked into the fibers like water into a sponge. The result is a fuzzy, low-contrast mark that scanners struggle to read. The solvent-based ink also takes longer to dry on that thirsty surface, which leads to smudging further down the conveyor belt. This is where a Drop-on-Demand (DOD) system changes the game.

The real culprit is often the production speed. When your line kicks up to 30 or 40 meters per minute, a standard CIJ can’t lay down enough ink without the print head getting too close to the moving box. The DOD system, like our NAXJET models, uses a different physics. It fires a larger droplet of ink directly on command. For porous materials like cardboard, this gives you a thicker, more opaque layer of ink that sits *on top* of the fiber instead of disappearing into it. Q1: Can I use my old solvent CIJ ink on a DOD head?

A: No. This is the number one mistake I see guys make. DOD systems use a pigment-based ink, not a solvent-based one. The viscosity and the drying chemistry are completely different. Putting solvent ink into a DOD head will gum up the nozzles in under an hour. Always use the ink the manufacturer specs, like our NAXJET certified cartridges. They are formulated for the specific jetting frequency of the DOD head.

Q2: The code looks faint when the box is moving fast at 50 meters a minute. What do I check?

A: First, check the drying time. If the cardboard is cold or the ink is drying too slow, the fiber will wick it away. You might need to pre-heat the cardboard with a simple IR lamp before it hits the print station. Second, check the trigger sensor. If the sensor is jittery, the dot placement gets staggered. Finally, increase the pulse width on the print head driver to lay down more ink per drop, but don’t overdo it or you will get puddling.

Q3: Do I need compressed air for the DOD system?

A: No, our TIJ-based DOD units are air-free. That is the beauty of them. The print head is a self-contained module. You just need power and a clean signal from your encoder.
